If you’re visiting San Sebastian from 1st October – 31st May you can take your dog on the beaches in the city.
However, dogs are not permitted on the beaches in San Sebastian between 1st June – 30th September.
But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! There are some beaches nearby where you can visit.
Plus, there are other parts of the city where you can let your canine friend loose.
In this article we’ll run through some of the dog friendly open spaces in summer in San Sebastian.
Beaches where you can take your dog near San Sebastian in summer
Visiting San Sebastian in the summer and still want to take your dog to the beach?
Well, the good news is, there are some beaches nearby where you can take your dog (at certain times of the day).
1. Zarautz Beach (25 minutes away)
Dogs are permitted in summer during the hours of 21:00 – 06:00.
Zarautz is a popular tourist destination in the summer, the beach is huge! There’s plenty of space for dogs to run around.
There are lots of bars on the beachfront where you can grab a drink on a terrace.
2. Orio (20 minutes away)
Dogs can visit Antilla Beach from 21:00 – 06:00. It’s also a beautiful walk (a couple of hours) from Igueldo to Orio if your dog is up for it!
The beach is a little outside the town centre. So if your dog isn’t quite up for a 2 hour walk, there are some beautiful walks closer to the beach too that make it worthwhile heading here.
3. Mutriku Beach (50 minutes away)
Best for those who want an early morning walk on the beach as dogs are permitted from 20:00 – 09:00.
4. Getaria (30 minutes away)
You can take your dogs on Malkorbe or Gaztetape Beach from 21:00 – 06:00.
The walk along the coast from Zarautz Beach is spectacular (it takes about 50 minutes). It’s well worth visiting to do just that, even if you don’t visit the beach!
There are some amazing places to eat in the centre of the town too.
Other places in San Sebastian where you can take your dog
We’re lucky in San Sebastian that the city has so many open spaces.
Amongst the three beaches, there are also three mountains in the city! These are great places to enjoy the open space with your dog.
5. Monte Igeldo
Although you’re just 20 minutes from the city centre, it feels like you’re in the countryside.
Monte Igeldo is full countryside walks (with incredible coastline views) suitable for dog walking.
There are quite a few farms in Igeldo with livestock, so keep your dog on the lead if that’s going to be a problem.
You can also take your dog up on the funicular and into the amusement park at the top of Monte Igeldo!
6. Monte Urgull
Right in the centre of San Sebastian and easily accessible from The Old Town, Gros and the Area Romantica, Urgull is another great option.
There are many different paths to the top of the mountain.
If you reach the top, you’ll be treated to some of the best views in the city!
Dogs can be let off the lead on Mount Urgull between 18:00 and 12:00 in the winter, and between 19:00 and 10:00 in the summer.
7. Monte Ulía
As we make our way west to east, Monte Ulía is the final mountain in the city that you’ll find at the far east of Gros.
The biggest of the three, you can walk many of Ulías paths for hours.
One of my personal favourite routes is to walk from Gros to Pasia (the next town along). You’ll be treated to both sea views from the cliffs and forest paths!
Dogs can be let off the lead on Mount Ulía between 18:00 and 12:00 throughout the year.
8. Miramar Palace
Whilst Miramar Palace has one of the most prominent locations in the city, it’s actually one of the best spots in the city to get away from all the noise!
The gardens that fall within the grounds of the Palace offer a calming and tranquil setting to take in the views of La Concha.
It’s the perfect place for a short walk with the dog.
9. Cristina Enea Park
The Cristina Enea Park sits at the heart of the Egia barrio (area).
Whilst there are plenty of green spaces in Donostia, Cristina Enea is the largest and most wooded park in the city.
There’s a charming 45 minute walk through the park. It will take you past The Cristina Enea estate, ponds, the river and even the park’s peacocks!
